Library Construction Update

Our new teen library, The Edge, is progressing right on schedule. Attendees of our gala got a sneak peek on November 2—some photos are included here—but anyone coming into the library can get a glimpse of The Edge from the lobby.

By now, all the infrastructure is finished, and the next two weeks will be spent installing the furniture, including the shelving, and setting up the technology. Late in November, we expect the “great wall” to come down and the fiction collection—along with the new books—to move back to the Martin Luther King side of the building.

What about the book returns? We expect to have the 24-hour book returns, the ones to the left of the main entrance, back up and running by mid-November.

Sometime in December, the self-check machines will be installed, making check-out a whole lot faster (and more private) for people who like to do it yourself. We will still staff a traditional circulation desk.

Expect a few more parts of the collection to move; we will have new guides to the collection ready in December. Ask for them at the front desk.

The grand opening of The Edge will be held on Saturday, December 14 at 2 p.m., and you’re invited! So mark the date.

Thanks to White Plains Library Foundation and the City of White Plains for funding this project. And a special thanks to both our staff—and especially our patrons!—for their patience throughout this process.
