What’s the buzz? Library Foundation hosts Adult and Teen Spelling Bee fundraiser to benefit The Trove!

Join us Friday, February 27, 7 p.m. at the HIGHLANDS MIDDLE SCHOOL AUDITORIUM for our first-ever Adult & Teen Spelling Bee. Have some fun watching teams of adults from community organizations and book groups and teens from White Plains High School test their spelling skills! Doors open at 7 p.m., Bee starts at 7:30 p.m. Snow date Friday March 6. Admission $5 payable at door. Kids under 6 free. Raffle drawing and refreshments available for purchase. Proceeds will support new technology for The Trove, our amazing children's library, celebrating its 10th birthday this year. Our celebrity emcee is Lawrence Otis

Black History StoryWalk® Opens Sunday, February 15 With Little Melba and Her Big Trombone.

Celebrate black history by taking the latest StoryWalk® in The Trove! The book being featured is Little Melba and Her Big Trombone, written by Katheryn Russell-Brown and illustrated by Frank Morrison. It is the story of African American jazz musician Melba Doretta Liston, the first woman trombonist to play in the big bands during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s — how she selected the trombone as her instrument, taught herself how to play it, and later went on to teach many of the great musicians of the twentieth century. Music Conservatory of Westchester Family Concerts

Join the White Plains Public Library and the Music Conservatory of Westchester for two interactive musical adventures exploring wind, brass, and string instruments as well as the voice. The programs will feature musical performances from a variety of musical styles including classical, jazz and popular selections. In addition, children will have the opportunity to explore and touch the instruments in an instrumental “petting zoo.” Sundays, February 8 and 22 at 2 p.m.

Target Sponsors Math and Science Bag-A-Tales and Storytimes

Up in Space and Sea Life were the themes that kicked off a new series of math and science storytimes in mid-January in The Trove. The storytimes offer demonstrations, including stories, interactive activities and crafts, of 12 new Bag-A-Tales available soon for checkout. Funding for the bags and storytimes has been provided by the White Plains Library Foundation through a Target Early Childhood Reading Grant. Each of the storytimes demonstrates a new bag containing fiction and non-fiction math and science books plus learning materials and suggestions for using the books with children in preschool through second grade. Create an App with MATLAB

Thursday, February 5 at noon Created by Mathworks, MATLAB® is a high-level language and interactive environment for numerical computation, visualization, and programming. It is mainly a tool for engineers, but it offers a multitude of computation possibilities. This class will provide design instruction within a Graphic User Interface (GUI) and computer programming using the MATLAB coding language. Come and learn how to create a basic computer application!
