What Am I Unpacking?

Just some of the fun give-aways for our program What Should We Read Next? If you are a member of a book group, or just a passionate reader, you won't want to miss this program. Carol Fitzgerald–publishing insider extraordinaire—will discuss the new fall books (and the stories behind the books), recommend authors not to miss, and suggest titles that will work with your book group. Refreshments will be served. Sunday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room. Register here.

Carol Fitzgerald is the President of The Book Report Network --- a group of internet sites about books and authors that have become the gathering places for a large and devoted community of booklovers since 1996. Programming is organized by demographic at Bookreporter.com, 20SomethingReads.com, Teenreads.com and Kidsreads.com and by special interest at ReadingGroupGuides.com.

With support from the White Plains Library Foundation.

This Week in White Plains

Don't miss the Commemoration of the Battle of White Plains on Saturday, October 28th. This year marks the 242nd anniversary of the battle. The event will be held at the Jacob Purdy House from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m., followed by an open house.

Common Ground:
Civic Engagement & Voting

October's Common Ground topic is Civic Engagement & Voting and will be held tomorrow, October 18 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Our facilitators will be people involved in local organizations that promote civic engagement, as well as someone with experience running for elected office. Come out and join fellow White Plains residents in an honest conversation about why you do (or don't) vote, what you think fair representation looks like, and the strengths/weaknesses of all of our different levels of government. No expertise or particular viewpoint is necessary to participate! Listeners as well as talkers welcome.

NYS Assembly District 93

The League of Women Voters of White Plains rescheduled the previously canceled Candidates Forum for candidates in the New York State Assembly District 93 election.

The Forum will be held on Tuesday, October 23 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Library's 2nd floor auditorium.

In accordance with League policy and in order to ensure that a wide range of issues are addressed by the candidates, questions must be submitted in writing in one of two ways: by email in advance of the meeting (by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 22) to lwvwp.candidateforums@gmail.com with the subject line "Question for Candidates," or in-person at the forum.  Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.  Cards will be available for audience members to submit questions.  Please include your name and address on your email or in-person question. Your address will not be made public. Questions will not be taken from the floor.

For additional information, please email the manager of Candidate Forums using the subject line “Candidate Forum” at lwvwp.candidateforums@gmail.com.

Anti-Bullying Workshop

Tomorrow, October 18, at 8:00 p.m. Mark Walters from Bullying Stops Today, and a former principal, will give a presentation on bullying. He will cover how to recognize if a friend or child is getting bullied and ways to help them "handle" the situation. This program is open to teens and parents.

Registration is required; to register, visit our online calendar or call the Edge at (914) 422-1481.

Jazz Jam with Art Bennett

Join musician Art Bennett in the cafe next Wednesday, October 24, at 6:00 p.m. for an evening of jazz. Bring your instrument and any tunes you want to work on, or just bring your ears to relax and listen. All musical skill levels are welcome. Art likes to run a workshop-style event, where you get a chance to see how musicians who have never played before work together to create! An electric piano and a PA will be available.

Decision Making for Teens

Aimee Frier from Planned Parenthood will be in the Edge on Monday, October 22 at 4:00 p.m. to give a workshop for teens about decision making. This lesson will help participants understand the “default” way adolescents’ brains work when making decisions. Participants should feel empowered by their ability to control this process through preparation and understanding. No registration is required.
