Best Audiobooks of 2018

Every year, through the Listen List Council of the American Library Association, librarians create the Listen List, selected for both avid listeners of audiobooks and those new to the pleasures of the fastest-growing format in publishing. This juried list of twelve newly-released titles features extraordinary narrators and listening experiences.

This past year jury members listened to 2,574 hours as they narrowed the field to 58 nominated audiobooks and selected winners that include fiction, nonfiction, memoir, and poetry, each an outstanding performance in terms of voice, accents, pitch, tone, inflection, rhythm and pace. Here’s the 12 that made the final cut.

This Week in White Plains

Know a high school student who dreams of being a brain surgeon? Have them sign up for the 7th annual local championship for the International Brain Bee hosted by Burke Rehabilitation Hospital on Wednesday, February, 28th.

The Brain Bee is a not-for-profit neuroscience competition for high school students designed to encourage them to learn more about the brain while also inspiring them to pursue careers in neurology and neurological research. Students in grades 9-12 will be quizzed by a distinguished panel of clinicians and therapists from Burke on a wide range of topics including human neuroanatomy, neuroscience, types of diagnoses and brain cell identification.

The Brain Bee will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Rosedale Conference room of Building #4 on the Burke campus located at 785 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains.

For additional information or to register, contact Janet Goodman, LMSW at (914) 597-2237 or email at jgoodman@burke.org.

The Artists' Loft is Back

On the last Wednesday of each month (beginning next week) from February through September, join Art Bennett and other guest teaching artists for evenings of fun, creativity, and community.

A few times through the year, guest teaching artists will come and run workshops focused on visual arts, dance, and/or hip-hop in parallel to Art’s music workshop. These sessions are modeled after musician and educator Art Bennett’s experience in the 1970s Loft Jazz scene in NYC, where artists of all mediums collaborated and created together. The Artists’ Loft will create a place for artists to come together in downtown White Plains. For more info on this program, and for a full schedule, please visit our website.

Spanish Conversation Group

Beginning next week, each Tuesday evening from 6:00-7:00 p.m., we will offer Tarde de Ñ, a Spanish conversation group for adults who speak Spanish as a second language at an intermediate or advanced level. This is not intended as a class for beginners, but rather an opportunity to practice pronunciation and meaning. Andrei Bezzubikoff will bring discussion topics in Spanish for each session.

Wellness Wednesday: Mindfulness

The terms “mindfulness” and “mindfulness meditation” are all over the media today. What do they actually mean? What part can they play in improving our lives? Whether you are a curious beginner or seasoned practitioner of mindfulness, you may benefit from Laurence Magro’s (MBA & MS) February 27 program, Mindfulness as a tool for Stress Management and Self-Exploration.
