By Ashley Bressingham, Kathlyn Carroll, Deb Gaffey, and Lauren Lichtenthal. – Youth Services staff.

After all the reading that we did for the children’s and teen Battle of the Books book selection process, we’re pleased to announce the official titles for the next Battle of the Books competition. While we’re not sure whether the next competition will take place in October 2020 or 2021, we’re excited to get a head start on preparing for the tournament.

Grades 4-6:

  • New Kid by Jerry Craft
  • The Parker Inheritance by Varian Johnson
  • The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
  • Bob by Wendy Mass and Rebecca Stead
  • The Next Great Paulie Fink by Ali Benjamin

Grades 6-12:

  • Nyxia by Scott Reintgen
  • Cinder by Marissa Meyer
  • Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson
  • The Secret Life of Prince Charming by Deb Caletti
  • Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

In the meantime, Ashley and Deb will host three virtual Book Bunch programs in April and May! Kids of any age who have read the books are welcome to join us, but we recommend these titles for those in grades 4-8.

We will discuss Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez on Wednesday, April 15th from 4:30-6:00. The book is available on Hoopla and OverDrive and the author will join us for the discussion!

Ashley and Deb will also host two virtual Book Bunch programs in May–one on the 6th and one on the 27th. Titles to be announced!

Teens are welcome to join a book discussion on Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson, one of the selected BOB titles for grades 6-12. This suspenseful title combines elements of historical fiction, murder mystery, and boarding school drama. Find Truly Devious on Hoopla or OverDrive now! Lauren and Kat will lead a discussion on Friday, May 8th, at 6:30 pm.

The book discussions are open to the public and your teens can definitely join if they’d like to! Our virtual calendar will have a link to each program hosted on Zoom closer to the dates of them.
