The Raven Heir
For Grades 3-6

“Isn’t it supposed to be a good thing to learn you’re the lost heir? Cordelia adores her family—her fellow triplets, Giles and Rosalind; their older half brother, Connall; her mother; and her mother’s friend who looks after the goats—but their secret castle in the woods is claustrophobic. She longs to turn into an animal and explore, but she’s promised her overprotective mother that she won’t wander off without supervision. Rosalind has her mock sword fighting, and Giles has his music, but Cordelia has only the desperate urge to fly free with her animal shape-shifting powers. Her dream of freedom twists into a nightmare when angry people bearing arms arrive at the castle demanding the war-torn kingdom’s heir. The triplets escape into the woods when the others are taken captive, shocked by uncovered family secrets. Cordelia, learning more of her past, now has her own secrets. It’s one thing to squabble with Giles and Rosalind, but will they forgive her for being as parsimonious with the truth as their mother has been? Ultimately, saving the world requires an unbearable sacrifice and reveals that even loving family members make dreadful mistakes. Though Cordelia and her siblings are primarily sketched in lightly around their traits and hobbies, their emotional journeys are rich, believable, and fulfilling. The triplets are light-skinned, Connall is brown, and the world is racially diverse and has a mixed-gender military. Chaotic, heartwarming, and emotionally satisfying with high stakes that keep readers invested. (Fantasy. 9-12)” –Kirkus Review

The Book of Stolen Dreams
For Grades 4-8
Library Collection
“High fantasy of adventure and bravery originally published in Great Britain. Mythical country Krasnia has been taken over by tyrant Charles Malstain. The once-thriving city of Brava is reduced to poverty and fear. But on Rachel Klein’s 11th birthday, her father invites her and her 12 1/2-year-old brother, Robert, to come to the North Brava Public Lending Library where he works. It is after closing hours, children (in particular) are not supposed to be outside after the 7 p.m. curfew, and Rachel wonders what her father is up to. In the Rare Books Room, Father hands Rachel an ancient, beautifully illustrated leather-bound book. Then soldiers arrive, and they must flee. Father hastily instructs the children to give the book to a particular person the next morning. As Rachel and Robert escape through a ventilation shaft, their father is beaten and arrested. So begins this intriguing, entertaining tale. With nods to both His Dark Materials and Lemony Snicket, the narrative spins a tale of good and evil, all the while interposing snippets of humor to keep things just a bit sardonic. As the siblings navigate the mystery of the book they have been given and learn its secret, they encounter new worlds and both brave and cowardly people. While an effervescent adventure, the story never loses sight of its timely theme: the essential need for a moral compass. Chapters open with enchanting spot art.” –Kirkus Review
