Poetry Slam: 20th Anniversary Celebration

Join Zork and Kristen in celebrating the 20th Anniversary of our library Poetry Slam with performances from two featured poets and an open mic! Schedule: 6:00 p.m. – refreshments and open mic signup begins; 6:30 p.m. – First featured poet performs; ~6:45 p.m. – second featured poet performs; ~7:00 p.m.: Open mic begins. We will have a feature performance by Rebecca P. Bruckenstein and Nina Belen Robins. Open mic will be limited to one poem per poet unless time allows for a second round.

Learn the basics of knitting or crochet with Kat & Kristen! We will teach beginner stitches and begin to knit/crochet a scarf. Knitting needles or a crochet hook and one skein of yarn will be provided to those starting out. For those returning, please bring your needles/hook and yarn. Registration required; please email Kristen at kthornton@whiteplainslibrary.org to register. Experienced crafters who do not need supplies or instruction are also welcome to attend. We will meet once a month to continue projects.

Build Your Own Rain Harvesting System

As a way to recognize and celebrate Earth Day and increase awareness around plastic waste and water conservation, come join us for a virtual program to learn how to create a rainwater harvesting system for your community. High school student Madeline Abrams has developed an environmentally friendly and economically accessible way to capture rainwater using otherwise discarded plastic water bottles to create an irrigation system for vegetable gardens, farms and landscapes. Madeline recently presented her rainwater harvesting system virtually to 45 communities in New York, California, Uganda, Namibia, Lesotho, Angola and South Africa. Her invention is being shared with villages and communities as a way to conserve water and address the issue of upcycling plastic waste that has become a major problem in many parts of the world. After the Zoom presentation, Madeline will share the instructional video she created as a reference to build her watering system to help communities harvest every drop.

Wanderhome is a relaxed journey through the peaceful land of the same name, a land where characters build their journey location by location and grow together as they travel.
