What’s Next in the Edge: June 2024

Read on to find out about the activities we've planned for grades 7-12 this spring. From our College and Career Club to the monthly After Hours for grades 9-12, we have a range of options available. Stop by anytime during Edge hours to say hello and find out more about the Edge.

Edge Hours:

Monday – Thursday: 3:00-8:00 p.m.
Friday: 3:00-6:00 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Drop-in Activities:

No registration is required for these ongoing programs for grades 7-12.

Movie Monday
Join us for a movie on Mondays at 4:00 p.m.

Tech Tuesday
Youth in grades 4-12 will learn about new technology topics on Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m.

Winning Wednesday
Play some board games with friends from 5:30-8:00 p.m.

Thoughtful Thursday
Take time for a meditative art project, selected Thursdays at 4:00 p.m.

Fun Friday
Join us for a fun afternoon activity at 4:00 p.m.: video games, board games, crochet, and creative writing are some of the possibilities.

Do Gooders
Need to earn some community service credit? Drop in and make some cards for Meals on Wheels. Saturdays from 2:00-4:00 p.m. through June 22. Do Gooders' Saturday session will be on hiatus for the summer. Check out our summer volunteer opportunities here.

Teens in grades 7 – 12 are invited to join an advisory board to help shape the future of the Edge. The board will help plan and organize Edge programming, among other initiatives. Teens may earn community service for meaningful participation.

The Edge Book Club

A new twist on our book discussion group for teens in grades 7-12. This month, no pressure to read the same book. Instead, we'll all discuss what we've been reading lately and share recommendations. No registration required.

Therapy Dog Time

Take some time to decompress during finals season and hang out with Rufus, a therapy dog.

White Plains Teens After Hours
Friday June 7 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

We're keeping the library open late ONLY for White Plains teens in grades 9-12. June's event features PS5 and Nintendo Switch gaming, arts and crafts, board games, and more. This month marks our one-year anniversary of hosting After Hours events for teens. We'll be taking the summer off from hosting After Hours, but the event will resume in the fall.

Virtual Tour: Visit a College
Monday June 10 at 4:00 p.m.

This session will a tour of the University or college campus of your choice. Experience Virtual Reality (VR) without a headset in the library's newly installed panoramic content room. Views from 360° content and more will be provided in this fun series of programs. Technology installed by Igloo Vision and funded by the Library Foundation/Optimum.

Reading Buddies Training Session
Tuesday June 11 at 4:00 p.m.

A training session for Reading Buddies, teen volunteers are paired with children who are learning to read. Teens provide encouragement while the children practice reading. Teens who wish to volunteer must apply and be accepted to the program, and will have the opportunity to practice job skills while making a difference in the community. Battle of the Books Interest Meeting

An interest meeting for Battle of the Books, a reading-based trivia tournament for students entering grades 7-12 in fall 2024. We're recruiting team members to begin practices in the fall. STEM Buddies Training Session
Thursday June 13 at 4:00 p.m.

A training session for STEM Buddies, teen volunteers who lead small groups of elementary school children in various STEM activities and games. Teens who wish to volunteer must apply and be accepted to the program, and will have the opportunity to practice job skills while making a difference in the community. Beginner Stitching

Learn the basics of knitting or crochet with Kat! We will teach beginner stitches and begin to knit/crochet a scarf. Knitting needles or a crochet hook and one skein of yarn will be provided to those starting out. For those returning, please bring your needles/hook and yarn. Registration required; please email Kat at kcarroll@whiteplainslibrary.org to register. Experienced crafters who do not need supplies or instruction are also welcome to attend. We will meet once a month to continue projects.

Wanderhome Session
Fridays June 14 and 21 at 4:30 p.m.

If you missed joining our first campaign, now's your chance! Wanderhome is a relaxed journey through the peaceful land of the same name, a land where characters build their journey location by location and grow together as they travel. No previous RPG experience needed, as Wanderhome is rules-light! Financial Literacy for Teens

During the Financial Literacy for Teens workshop students will learn how to make wise financial decisions to promote financial well-being over their lifetime.

The 1776 Declaration of Independence in White Plains

Learn about why the 1776 reading of the Declaration of Independence, specifically at the White Plains court house, was such a big deal for America. Technology installed by Igloo Vision and funded by the Library Foundation/Optimum.

Get Into Your Picture
June 27, 28 and 29 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Participants in this workshop will receive a free photographic portrait produced collaboratively with artist Francois Deschamps and printed on the spot at the White Plains Library. In a two-hour guided session, a small group of 4-5 participants will produce individual drawings and photographs to be combined on the computer into final images. Artist and participant will work together on a computer to assemble and print the final image. There is no fee but the participant must sign up for a two-hour session and must show up on time. They must also have written permission from a guardian to have the photograph made and be exhibited at the White Plains library. Participants are strongly encouraged to come to the workshop with specific ideas, images, or objects they want to use in the final image. Registration required. Email Kat at kcarroll@whiteplainslibrary.org to register for a timeslot: 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

Intergenergaytional Book Club

To celebrate Pride Month, join us for a fun afternoon discussing the graphic novel Snapdragon by Kat Leyh! Middle and high schoolers will team up with seniors from The LOFT's Silver Connections to discuss the book and play in a trivia competition!!

Learn about 3D Printing in the Igloo
