The Library is so excited to bring back a “read to a dog” program, with Paws to Read during which children in grades K-6 can read with therapy dog Rufus.

Paws for Reading takes place on Fridays – June 28, July 12 and 26, August  2 and 9 – from 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Spots are limited to five children per session.  Sign up at the Compass Desk in the Trove starting 30 minutes prior. 

Reading with a therapy dog has numerous benefits for children. Reading to a dog is therapeutic, calming and very rewarding. According to American Libraries Magazines.org, “…children read aloud to animals–usually dogs–instead of their peers, and the fear of making a mistake will subside, allowing them to achieve their reading potential.”

About Rufus:

Rufus is an almost 3 year old mini goldendoodle who is a registered therapy dog with Intermountain Therapy Animals and a registered Reading Education Assistance Dog with the R.E.A.D. program.

Rufus loves working in different environments from schools to even dance studios! One of his favorite programs has been walking in the park with people with special needs.

He is looking forward to making new friends at the White Plains Public Library and listening to lots of stories.
