Opinions and Opossums by Ann Braden

Going to confirmation class, Agnes has a lot of questions about what she’s learning – but they’re not questions her mother, her pastor, or one of her classmates appreciates her asking. But after a talk with her anthropologist neighbor opens her eyes, Agnes starts to think about everything differently – and maybe her mind won’t be the only one to change.
Braden wrote a story with many important thoughts about religion being examined and discussed – a discussion that more children and young adults deserve to hear and consider. The focus on Agnes believing in herself and speaking up is fantastic – especially in today’s times, when misinformation and groupthink is running so rampant.
Check out the book that Booklist Reviews called “perfect for middle-graders of any faith, especially those learning to make their faith their own” with a “relatable core plot [folding in] themes of income inequality, sexism, and asserting one’s rights, moves quickly” and “the strong women in Agnes’ life steal the show”; SLJ Reviews praised as “thought-provoking realistic fiction,” “a multigenerational story of how poetry and speaking your truth can be refreshing and connecting” and “a healthy reminder that the status quo continually needs to be challenged by thoughtful youths”; and Kirkus Reviews described as “a nuanced story supported by clear metaphors and honest, deep emotions” and “mind-expanding.”
