What’s Next in the Edge: October 2024

Read on to find out about the activities we've planned for grades 7-12 this fall. As usual, we have a lot going on. Stop by anytime during Edge hours to say hello and find out more about the Edge.

Edge Hours

Monday – Thursday: 3:00-8:00 p.m.
Friday: 3:00-6:00 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 1:00-5:00 p.m.

No registration is required for these ongoing programs for grades 7-12.

Video Game Time
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during Edge hours.

Tech Tuesday
Youth in grades 4-12 will learn about new technology topics on select Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m.

Thoughtful Thursday
Take time for a meditative art project on Thursdays at 4:00 p.m.

The Library offers a fun, unprogrammed time ONLY for White Plains teens in grades 9-12. Games, crafts, coloring, food, hanging out, video games, karaoke, virtual experiences, dancing, are all just some of the things that could be going on! Teens must be in grades 9-12 and able to show White Plains residence.

Beginner Stitching
Saturday October 5 at 10:00 a.m.
Museum Gallery
Teens, Adults
Learn the basics of knitting and crochet with Kat and Cecelia! We will teach beginner stitches and provide yarn and the needles/hook needed to make a practice square. Experienced crafters are welcome to attend any session; registration is required for beginners. Space for learners is limited in order to provide a good experience for everyone. Wanderhome
Fridays October 11 and 18 at 4:30 p.m.

Wanderhome is a relaxed journey through the peaceful land of the same name, a land where characters build their journey location by location and grow together as they travel. No previous RPG experience needed, as Wanderhome is rules-light! We'll continue the game begun in January. **Potential new members please email Erica at eroberts@whiteplainslibrary.org before coming**

Do Gooders

Teens in grades 7-12 can earn community service hours by attending Do Gooders meetings. We work on projects to benefit the library or other local organizations and plan future After Hours events. No registration is required.

Changing the World with Your One Vote
Wednesday October 16 at 6:00 p.m.

There are lots of names on a ballot, but how do you decide which box to check? Come learn about how to register, and how to select your candidates, before the registration deadline on October 26th! This event is based on the Michigan State University Extension 4-H Adulting 101 webinar of the same name, and the description was based off of the description they used on their website, which can be found here

Edge Advisory Board

Teens in grades 7 – 12 are invited to join an advisory board to help shape the future of the Edge. The board will help plan and organize Edge programming, among other initiatives. Teens may earn community service for meaningful participation.

STEAM Saturday
Saturday October 19 at 2:00 p.m.
Galaxy Hall
Grades 4-8
Students will learn the science behind why things are as they are while also unlocking the creative side of their brains through a hands-on experience with STEM experiments. Topics will include biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, and computer science. Tickets will be given out starting 30 minutes prior to the program at the Compass Desk in the Trove.

Financial Literacy for Teens
Monday October 21 at 4:00 p.m.

During the Financial Literacy for Teens workshop students will learn how to make wise financial decisions to promote financial well-being over their lifetime. This is a virtual event using the Zoom Platform. Please register for the event here (be sure to include your email address) and the appropriate Zoom information will be sent to you in a timely manner. 

Successfully Navigating College Admissions
Tuesday October 22 at 4:00 p.m.

Stand Out For College will discuss current college admissions trends, admissions strategies, the changing test-optional environment, the importance of researching and visiting colleges to find schools that can be a good fit for your child, a timeline and other action steps that can be taken to make this fall productive and help reduce the stress around the college admissions process. This program is recommended for parents and their high school teens and is a detailed and strategic overview of what students should focus on for a successful college admissions process. The presentation will be led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper, partners at Stand Out For College, LLC. (www.standoutforcollege.com) The program will be held via Zoom and at the live stream can be viewed in the Edge Media Lab.

Igloo Virtual Tour: Visit a College
Monday October 28 at 4:00 p.m.
The Igloo
Teens
This session will a tour of the University or college campus of your choice. Experience Virtual Reality (VR) without a headset in the library's newly installed panoramic content room. Views from 360° content and more will be provided in this fun series of programs. Technology installed by Igloo Vision and funded by the Library Foundation/Optimum.; Location is in the Optimum Technology Room, formerly Room A (near the entrance of the Trove on the 2nd floor). Seating can be provided if requested, but attendees are encouraged to stand (or sit on the carpeted floor) during the presentation.
