From the Bronx River Parkway (heading north): Turn right off the Parkway at Exit 21. You are now on Main Street. Follow Main Street to the fourth traffic light and turn right onto Court Street. Go one block to the traffic light and turn right on Martine Avenue. Go straight through one traffic light (this is the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd) and the library will be on your left.

After one block Tarrytown Road bears left and goes under a underpass; you are now on Main Street. Follow Main Street to the fourth traffic light and turn right onto Court Street. Go one block to the traffic light and turn right on Martine Avenue. Go straight through one traffic light (this is the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd) and the library will be on your left.

From the New York State Thruway (heading east, from the Tappan Zee Bridge): Get off the Thruway at Exit 8, you will be on the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) heading east. Follow the Cross Westchester Expressway to Exit 5 (Route 119, White Plains). At the end of the exit ramp you will be on Tarrytown Road, heading towards White Plains. Follow Tarrytown Road until it bears left, and goes under an overpass; you are now on Main Street. Follow Main Street to the fourth traffic light and turn right onto Court Street. Go one block to the traffic light and turn right on Martine Avenue. Go straight through one traffic light (this is the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd) and the library will be on your left.

From the Cross Westchester Expressway (heading east): Follow the Cross Westchester Expressway to Exit 5 (Route 119, White Plains). From the Cross Westchester Expressway (heading west): Exit the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) at Exit 6. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left and go one block to the intersection of North Broadway. Turn left on North Broadway. Continue straight about 1/2 mile past the point where North Broadway becomes a divided roadway, and look for Main Street. Go one block past Main Street and turn right on to Martine Avenue. Follow Martine Avenue past the fourth traffic light (this is the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd), and the library will be on the left.

From Westchester Avenue (Exit 8 off the Cross Westchester Expressway): Follow Westchester Avenue until it goes into Broadway, there will be a hill here. At the top of the hill, bear left following the signs for the Business District, on to Broadway heading south. After one block turn right on to Martine Avenue. Follow Martine Avenue past the fourth traffic light (this is the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd), and the library will be on the left.

From Post Road (N.Y. Route 22, heading north): Follow Post Road into White Plains. Turn left on to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. At the second traffic light, turn left on to Martine Avenue. The Library will be on the left.

From Central Park Avenue (heading north): Follow Central Park Avenue north to the intersection with Tarrytown Road. Turn Right on to Tarrytown Road. Follow Tarrytown Road until it bears left, and goes under an underpass; you are now on Main Street. Follow Main Street to the fourth traffic light and turn right onto Court Street. Go one block to the traffic light and turn right on Martine Avenue. Go straight through one traffic light (this is the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd) and the library will be on your left.

From New England: Follow I-95 south. The Connecticut Turnpike becomes the New England Thruway at the New York border. Exit the Thruway on to the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) at exit 21. Exit the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) at Exit 6. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left and go one block to the intersection of North Broadway. Turn left on North Broadway. Continue straight about 1/2 mile past the point where North Broadway becomes a divided roadway, and look for Main Street. Go one block past Main Street and turn right on to Martine Avenue. Follow Martine Avenue past the fourth traffic light (this is the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd), and the library will be on the left.

Using public transportation:  Take the Metro North Railroad Harlem Line to the White Plains Station.  (This is 22 Miles from Grand Central according to Metro North.)  The White Plains Public Library is within 1/2 mile of the train station.  To walk to the Library, follow Main Street east for two blocks to the corner of Main and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.  Turn right (south) on Martin Luther King and walk one block (you will go under the Galleria parking garage) to the corner of Martin Luther King and Martine Ave.  The Library on the opposite corner of Martine and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.  There are also taxis available at the Metro North train station which can take you to the Library for a fee.

Parking:  There is a municipal parking lot below the Library.  The entrance to this lot is a ramp on the left side of Martine Avenue, just past the Library building.  This is a metered lot, so bring quarters.

If you live in White Plains, you are eligible to receive a White Plains Public Library card.

Your White Plains card is honored by all Westchester public libraries and by the Westchester Community College library. Guest privileges may be available if you are residing temporarily in White Plains. Your Library card will be valid for three years.

Anyone eligible for a card may use the online form provided below to get a card. Library cards will be mailed to the street address (no post offices boxes) provided. Please include the apartment or suite number with the street address. If you apply online, we’ll email you a library card number. Once you receive it, your card number can be used immediately to check out books, movies, music, hotspots and museum passes; reserve books; use a computer; download and stream eBooks, eAudiobooks, movies and music, plus access free online tools and resources.

You may also apply for a library card in person at the library. Two forms of ID, one with your name and current address, are required the first time you register and each time you renew in person.

Guest privileges may be available if you are residing temporarily in White Plains. You can only apply for Guest cards in-person with proof of White Plains temporary housing. Guest cards expire after three months and can be renewed with proof of continued temporary housing in White Plains.

If you do not live in White plains:

A) You may use the White Plains Public Library if you have a library card in good standing from your Westchester home library.
For Westchester Residents who have not obtained a library card from their home library and would like to use the White Plains Public Library on a temporary basis, please contact the Circulation desk at 914-422-1490 for more information.

B) If you live outside Westchester County, but work, go to school or own property in White Plains, you are eligible to receive a White Plains Public Library card.

C) If you live outside of Westchester County and DO NOT work, go to school, or own property in Westchester, you may purchase a card from the Westchester Library System at an annual fee of $75. For patrons aged 65 and over, a System card can be purchased at a discounted price of $35. This application form, available for new cards and renewals, should be sent directly to WLS with your payment. Your card will be mailed to you directly from the Westchester Library System and is honored at all Westchester public libraries.

The borrowing limit is 75 items per card, including up to 20 each of the following types of materials: CDs, DVDs & Blu-ray disks, Launchpads and audiobooks.

Renewals of materials may be made in-person, by calling the automated renewal line at 914-674-4169 or online. Telephone and online renewals are available 24/7. See the above chart for renewal limits. Renewals cannot be made on items that are overdue, on hold or on interlibrary loan. Only patrons in good standing may renew items.

Holds may be placed on most circulating items of the WLS catalog and can be picked up at or returned to any WLS library. Patrons may reserve in person, by phone at 422-1480 or online. Patrons are notified by email or phone (per the patron’s preference) when the hold becomes available. Items are held for seven days. Interlibrary loans may be placed on items from other libraries beyond the Westchester Library System. Fees from the lending library may apply. Contact Adult Reference for more information.

Materials may be returned in person during Library hours or at book drops. Book drops are provided for your convenience but may not always be available. Books returned to book drops after library hours or before 8:00 am are checked in on the previous day.
