What is Freading?

Hint: it means eBooks from the Library without the wait!

Freading is a new online service that allows White Plains Library cardholders to download eBooks to their favorite devices. (Except for the older Kindles. It does work with the Kindle Fire.) Freading offers over 11,000 titles in all genres and is particularly strong in Mystery, Romance, and Self-Help. You will find many Children’s titles there too.

Freading does not have books from any of the “big six” publishers but does have a wide array of titles from some of the smaller presses like Algonquin, Kensington, and Poison Pen.

Freading uses a token system, an online currency if you will, to determine how many titles a user can check out per week. Everyone gets 5 tokens a week and books are valued at 4, 2, and 1 token depending on how recently they were released. Once you use up your tokens, you have to wait until Monday at midnight and then you will have 5 tokens added to your account again.

To access Freading, go to the library’s home page and click on the eBooks logo. You will be brought to a page that offers all of our eBook and eAudiobook services. The third choice is Freading [you will notice that is for White Plains Library cardholders only].  To read a Freading book, you will either need Adobe Digital Editions or a Freading App. If you already have the Overdrive Media Console for the iPad or iPhone, you can read Freading books without adding any other software.
