We are excited to announce that Everything I Never Told You, by Celeste Ng, has been selected as our choice for One Book, One White Plains. A moving exploration of family, history and the meaning of home, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and an examination of the rifts that keep us apart.

“One Book, One White Plains is an opportunity for White Plains residents of all backgrounds to come together and share Celeste Ng’s moving novel,” said Mayor Tom Roach. “Through reading and discussing the same book, One Book, One White Plains will enhance our sense of community while fostering literacy and the value of reading.”

Everything I Never Told You, Ng’s debut novel, received immediate acclaim when it was published in 2014. According to Publishers Weekly: “This emotionally involving novel explores the themes of belonging using the story of the death of a teenage girl, Lydia, from a mixed race family in 1970s Ohio….Lydia is remarkably imagined, her unhappy teenage life crafted without an ounce of cliché.”

Everything I Never Told You was selected by a group that included White Plains High School faculty and students, library staff, members of the Library Board of Trustees and the White Plains Library Foundation, reading group members, as well as representatives from the Mayor’s Office and community organizations.

One Book, One White Plains will take place over September and October. At the heart of the program are reading groups, and the Library will provide groups to discuss just this novel, work with existing reading groups throughout the City to include it as their September or October selection, as well as host “pop-up” groups in a variety of venues.

The Library will invest in multiple copies of the book, in both print and eBook, so that every reader will have access to the novel. Other events will include a writing group as well as a film series that explores themes similar to those in Everything I Never Told You. Look for our guide to One Book, One White Plains available this summer.

I would also like to participate and am currently not in a book club. How do I register for one of the pop-up discussions at the library?
