Hoopla Staff Picks: R&B

Possibly our most dynamic digital resource, Hoopla includes a variety of different formats from books to movies and music. In order to highlight some of these, we've gathered staff recommendations of just a few formats you can stream and download with your library card. Below are some music recommendations from Adult Services Librarian Mariel Perez.

Summer: The Original Hits (2018)
Donna Summer
Another oldie, but goodie! Perfect party or driving music or in my case, cleaning music. A great pick me up for those who love to dance, exercise, or just want to feel happy. All good memories for me. Some of my favorites: “Last Dance,” “She Works Hard for the Money,” “On the Radio,” and more. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

24K Magic (2016)
Bruno Mars
Love, love Bruno Mars! Not only is he a great singer, but also a great entertainer. He is a combination of the old school likes of Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson, James Brown, and Prince. Some of my favorites: “24k Magic,” “Chunky, and “Finesse” featuring Cardi B, a New Jack Swing style from the 80s and 90s. All the songs are catchy and fun. Looking forward to see him in concert someday.

The Very Best of Prince (2001)
This album is a great collection of 17 songs spread across a number of years and albums. For the older generation (Generation X) like myself, this is a chance to reminisce about the classics this man has made. Songs like “When Doves Cry,” “Little Red Corvette,” and “I Would Die 4 U” are just some of my favorites. It brings me back to my childhood years and just puts a smile on my face especially during these trying times. This is also a great introduction for the younger generation.

Drive (2019)
Raiche
I was first introduced to this artist after watching the movie Self Made on Netflix about a month ago and have been listening to her ever since. I fell in love with the song “Drive” and quickly became a fan. Raiche brings a Billy Holiday and Sade type of feel. Her song “Complicated” is an empowering song, telling young women they can leave a bad relationship. “Lights Out” is another good one about never giving up. In all, I recommend this artist and am looking forward to her future songs.
