December Coding Programs

The Library will be celebrating The Hour of Code (December 7-13) by offering a variety of coding programs and resources for parents, caregivers, and children. The Hour of Code is observed during Computer Science Education Week, as it honors the life of computer pioneer Admiral Grace Hooper (born on December 9, 1906).

We will be conducting programs such as Tech for Parents: Coding Resources, binary coding, and Code Heroes Camp (grades 6-8). Along with these fun virtual activities we will also have a binary bead Grab&Go bag kit (grades 4-8) available to pick up on December 28th. Please feel free to make an appointment to visit The Trove to check out some recommended STEAM books that focus on technology.

Virtual Programs

Code Heroes Camp
Monday, December 7th through Friday, December 11th, from 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Take part in a Week of Code with the Code Heroes Camp! Learning to code is about much more than simply creating games. Code can be used to educate our peers and change the world. This program focuses on creating amazing experiences with code to educate our community on the effects of cyberbullying. Students will address the impacts of cyberbullying and design a choose your own adventure game that presents a variety of different cyberbullying scenarios. Each group will brainstorm and storyboard their scenarios, create custom graphics, and code their games using Scratch! The Digital Arts Experience is providing this program in partnership with AT&T and The Westchester Library System. For grades 6-8. Registration is for the entire week of the program Dec. 7-11. “Tech for Parents: Coding Resources”
Thursday, December 10th at 5:00 p.m.
In concert with the national “hour of code” movement, the Library will be offering a program for parents of children who may be interested in coding. Digital Media Specialist Austin Olney will break down some of the major, freely-accessible resources available to young programmers, whether they are experienced or beginners. All are welcome to join this fun and informative program. Click here to register.

“Binary Coding”
Wednesday, December 30th at 10:30 a.m.
At the end of December, youth are invited to learn about the fundamental backbone of all everything digital and look at binary code. In doing so, they will look behind the curtains of computer technology and see how it is nothing but a vast system of switches. This program is congruent with Gr4-8 STEAM Grab & Go Kits through the Trove. Click here to register.

Binary Bead Bracelet Kit

In this kit you will find STEAM Supplies:

  • Black and White Beads
  • A string
  • Instructions on how to create a Binary Bead

This is a wonderful activity to do to celebrate The Hour of the Code in December. Your child will learn the basics of coding through creating a bracelet.

  • Follow Eric’s instructions from this video: link
  • Find the first letter of your first name in the Binary Decoder Key.
  • Fill in the squares of the provided bracelet to match the pattern of the squares next to the letter that you selected.
  • Cut the bracelet out.
  • Tape the bracelet around your wrist to wear it!
  • Share your bracelet with your family to see if they can figure out your letter.
