Local history legend Jack Harrington passed away on Sunday, May 14, at age 97. As a tireless advocate of preservation and conservation (historical and environmental), Harrington knew more about White Plains than just about anybody. To learn more about his life and legacy, check out his oral histories on our website or contact the White Plains Historical Society.
Hi, I’m Ben Himmelfarb, the librarian responsible for local history. Since joining WPPL in October 2014, I have sought to increase access to and use of the White Plains Collection through research assistance, improved finding aids, and engaging programs. I value connecting patrons with historical materials and fostering the creation of historical knowledge. White Plains is a fascinating city. It is a crossroads for Westchester County and a great location for examining the local manifestations of broad historical trends and events. White Plains was the setting for important events in diverse circumstances- from European colonization and the Revolutionary War to public education reform and urban renewal projects. I am interested in supporting people’s research interests in any area. My research interests include urban renewal, social justice movements, and Dutch colonial history.
