Children in grades 2-5 with their families will create an altar honoring a very special person already departed. Sessions 1 & 2 will be devoted to creating your altars. At session 3, we will be celebrating the life of your dearly departed loved-ones and enjoying some snacks. Registration for all three sessions begins on October 3rd, in person at the Trove info desk or by phone (914-422-1476).

Los niños en grados 2-5, junto con sus familias, crearán un altar honrando a una persona muy especial ya fallecida. Las sesiones 1 y 2 serán dedicadas a crear los altares. En la 3ra sesión, celebraremos la vida de su persona especial ya fallecida y compartiremos una merienda. La inscripción para las 3 sesiones comienza el 3 de octubre en el escritorio de referencia del Trove, o por teléfono (914-422-1476).

Day of the Dead Traditions/Tradiciones del Día de los Muertos

The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is based on ancient Aztec traditions. Originally celebrated at the beginning of August, this tradition was later adopted by the Catholic Church and became el Día de los Muertos. The Day of the Dead  is primarily celebrated in Mexico, Central America, and  in the South West of the United States. Ever more frequently, it is celebrated  in cities of the United States that have large Mexican and Central American populations. The Day of the Dead is  celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. These days are also known as Día de los Angelitos (All Saints Day) and Día de los Difuntos (All Souls Day) in the Catholic tradition.

Families gather together for this festive holiday to honor and remember family members and friends who are no longer with them. Some of the holiday’s traditions include creating altars celebrating the deceased called ofrendas, and visiting the graveyard at night on November 1st where families sing and eat around the tombs of their loved ones. For several years families have been coming together at the Library to craft altars, share their memories of their loved-ones, and eat treats such as pan de muertos.

El Día de los Muertos, o Day of the Dead, está basado en tradiciones aztecas antiguas. Originalmente se celebraba a principios de agosto, lo cual cambió al ser esta tradición adoptada por la iglesia católica, convirtiéndose así en el Día de los Muertos. Este día se celebra principalmente en México, América Central y el suroeste de los Estados Unidos. Esta celebración es más frecuente ahora en las ciudades de Estados Unidos donde existen comunidades significativas de mexicanos y centroamericanos. El Día de los Muertos se celebra el 1 y 2 de noviembre. Estos días también se conocen como el Día de los Angelitos (All Saints Day) y el Día de los Difuntos (All Souls Day) en la tradición católica.

Las familias se unen este día para honrar y recordar a familiares y amigos ya fallecidos. Una de las tradiciones de esta celebración es crear altares honrando a los difuntos, llamados “ofrendas”; otra tradición es visitar los cementerios la noche del primero de noviembre, donde las familias cantan y comen alrededor de las tumbas de sus seres queridos. Por varios años, familias de nuestra comunidad se han reunido en la Biblioteca para crear altares, compartir recuerdos de sus seres queridos y comer delicias tradicionales como el “pan de muertos”.

The Day of the Dead is a happy day when Mar's family gathers together. There are favorite dishes to enjoy, games to be played, and most importantly, stories to tell. No one in the family is forgotten because this is the day of the year when the dead come to visit the living-and for this day it is almost as if they're alive again.

El Día de los Muertos es un día feliz para la familia Mar. Aquí reunidos, los Mar disfrutan de sus platos preferidos, juegan juntos y sobre todo escuchan los cuentos de su familia. The Mexican skeleton Catrina has been invited to a Day of the Dead dance, and she's searching for just the right outfit to wear. She pulls her Aunt María's dress from a dusty chest, but it has a stain! There's a skirt made of fine cloth, but it looks like a dusty old drape. El esqueleto mexicano Catrina ha sido invitada a una fiesta del Día de los Muertos y está buscando el ajuar perfecto. Saca el vestido de la tía María de un cajón polvoriento, ¡pero tiene una mancha!
