Heart Gallery Showcase

The Westchester County Department of Social Services is sponsoring an exhibit of photos of children needing loving adoptive homes in their annual Heart Gallery Showcase. The exhibit will be on view through October 10 but the need for homes continues year round. An opening reception will be held in the Library Auditorium on Wednesday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m. Keynote speaker for the event is Darryl McDaniel, a pioneer of hip hop culture and one of the founding members of the hip hop group Run–D.M.C. Build a High-Powered PC

Building a computer from parts is much cheaper than buying one readily assembled. At the “Build a High-Powered PC” series of courses, every Tuesday in October at 4:00 p.m. in The Edge, teens will be able to assist in the building of a modern gaming rig. Instruction about microprocessors, RAM, motherboards, power supplies, hard drives, and graphics cards will be taught throughout. If teens wish to build a computer on their own, methods of selecting and purchasing compatible computer parts online will be shown as well. Registration is not required and all equipment is provided.

International Film Festival Returns!

Please join us for our annual, summertime International Film Festival. On Thursdays in July and August (starting July 10) we will show films from a variety of countries. Each film will be shown at 2 p.m. and repeated at 7 p.m. Our festival has been running since 1987—27 years!— with only two summers when it went on hiatus. Maker Morning

The current “Maker Revolution” is all about imagination and implementation. On Saturday, May 3rd, a celebration of this new culture will take place at the White Plains Public Library. Ebru-Water Marbling Demonstration

The White Plains Public Library with the collaboration of the Turkish Cultural Center of Westchester present the elegantly beautiful ancient art form of Ebru – Water Marbling to the community. Artists Yurdagul and Yasemin Ozsavasci will create elegant works of art by dripping special paints over a water table, which disperse into free flowing designs of floral arrangements. Virtual Computing

Have you ever seen a computer inside a computer? With VirtualBox, a free virtualization product from Oracle, you can install and use an isolated Operating System (OS) within another. Teens are welcome to join this class on December 3rd and December 10th from 5-6pm to find out how. Students will use library equipment in order to install a virtual Linux OS called “ArtistX” and learn all about it. For teens. Multi-Sensory Storytime on Saturday, November 16 at 10:30 a.m.

Join staff from the Kiyoko Brown Lekotek Center for a storytime designed for all abilities and attention spans. It is recommended for children on the autism spectrum as well as other children with disabilities. Children from 3 to 6 years old with a caregiver are welcome to register for this program beginning on November 2 – please register in person in The Trove. The program will be repeated on December 21.

Our Poetry Slam & Open Mic program this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. features Venessa Marie Marco, a member of the 2013 Nuyorican National Slam Team, which placed third in the National Poetry Slam in Boston in August. School starts in White Plains on Monday, September 9. For children entering Kindergarten, it is an important time. Watch a film together with your child to help them get ready. Library Team Competes in National Poetry Slam

The Library's poetry slam team is competing in preliminary bouts at the 2013 National Poetry Slam in Boston this Tuesday and Thursday. Hostage, Eric ZORK Alan (slammaster), Nina Robins, and AJ won spots on the team by competing in our Poetry Slam Finals in May. Assistant slammaster LV (Laura Vookles) will also travel to Boston with the team. The White Plains Library Slam will be one of 72 teams from all over the United States and Canada who will take part in the preliminaries at seven venues in the Boston-Cambridge area.
