The Hub Groundbreaking was a Success

We hosted a “virtual” groundbreaking on Wednesday, September 7 for our upcoming adult library, The Hub. The first floor renovations will include:  enhanced and expanded technology; comfortable seating to relax and read; more space for informal and formal learning; improved meeting and classroom space; a new community room for programs and events; and a wonderful café in the heart of White Plains. “Through the creation of the The Trove children's library, The Edge teen space and now The Hub, as well as their innovative programming and offerings, the White Plains Public Library has proven that libraries are as relevant and important today

Book ‘Em Goes Historical

Our mystery book group, Book ‘Em, facilitated by Library Director Brian Kenney, will be going back in time this season–from Ancient Rome to colonial India to Belfast in the '80s–as they read some of the finest crime fiction, each of which is first in a series. The first session is Wednesday, September 21 and we will be discussing The Strangler Vine by M. International Film Festival

Our ever-popular International Film Festival returns starting Monday, July 11. Each film will be screened at 2 p.m. on Mondays through August 15. The festival has been going since 1987 (with a few breaks for construction and the like). Because we want our festival to be international in scope, we show motion pictures from a variety of countries and cultures, including those that reflect a film-making tradition that may be very different from our own. 17th Annual Clarice Wilson Memorial Concert

Join us for the 17th annual Clarice Wilson Memorial Concert, presented by White Plains Library Foundation. On Sunday, April 17 at 2:00 p.m., violinist Alejandro Mendoza and pianist Adam Kent present an afternoon of sonatas for violin and piano by several of Clarice Wilson's most beloved composers, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johannes Brahms, and Cesar Franck. We welcome your donations to the Clarice Wilson Memorial Fund of the White Plains Library Foundation, in memory of Clarice Wilson, Music Specialist at the Library from 1974-1999. Hidden in Plain Sight Opens in The Gallery

“Hidden in Plain Sight,” an exhibition of photographs by Barry Katzen of architectural details on buildings in White Plains, will go on view at The Gallery in the White Plains Public Library on June 19. The exhibition will be open to the public through August 2, 2015. Join us in Celebrating the Triumph of the Armenian Spirit

On Sunday, June 14 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. we’re hosting a program of Armenian culture for all ages, “Emerging from the Shadows: The Triumph of the Armenian Spirit.” Come enjoy Armenian songs (instrumentals featuring duduk, oud, dumbeg and piano), Armenian poetry recitation, Armenian dance, and craft making for children. This is a rare opportunity to hear the ancient duduk (doo-dook), a woodwind instrument with double reeds and a haunting timbre. Musicians Mirijohn and Anoush Givelekian, Stamford residents, along with Richard and Connie Shelengian of White Plains, are two husband-wife couples seeking to preserve their culture and share it with the community.

Klezmer on a Sunday Afternoon

Bring the whole family and enjoy a delightful program of spirited klezmer music on Sunday, January 25 at 2 p.m. The Westchester Klezmer Program is an intergenerational klezmer band program in Westchester County, New York. It is among the largest programs of its kind in the country, if not the world! Westchester Klezmer Program musicians participate by learning and rehearsing klezmer music and then performing at various community based events. Westchester Klezmer Program last played White Plains Library in 2010. International Film Festival Returns!

Please join us for our annual, summertime International Film Festival. On Thursdays in July and August (starting July 10) we will show films from a variety of countries. Each film will be shown at 2 p.m. and repeated at 7 p.m. Our festival has been running since 1987—27 years!— with only two summers when it went on hiatus. College Essay Workshop for First Generation College Students

We will host a college essay writing workshop for first generation college students on Saturday, October 19 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 26 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. (This is a two-session program.)
