New Resource: The CIA’s World Factbook

Are you looking to travel internationally or launch a product in another country’s market? The CIA’s World Factbook is a useful resource with which to begin your research. It provides basic intelligence on over 260 country/territory entities around the world, including population, demographics, government, economy, energy, geography, environment, communications, transportation, military, terrorism, and transnational issues. Though earlier editions were classified for U.S. policymakers and officials, the CIA now makes The World Factbook publicly available on the internet, where it finds widespread use among students and academic researchers. The Edge at the White Plains Public Library is happy to continue our new College and Career Edge series this school year. We'll be using our new Igloo room to host a variety of virtual and in-person programs. In the Igloo, students can experience Virtual Reality (VR) without a headset in the library's newly installed panoramic content room. September Programs for Younger Kids

Great programs for younger children take place all month long, every month, at the Library.  See our online calendar or stop in the Trove for location information. Storytimes! Ages 2-6, Families Tuesdays, 11:00 a.m. – September 3, 17 Thursdays, 11:00 a.m. – September 5, 12, 19, 26 Ticket required. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis starting 30 minutes before the program. Stories, songs and fun with a Trove Librarian. After Hours for White Plains Teens in Grades 9-12

As part of a citywide initiative to provide more evening activities for high schoolers, the Library is excited to offer regular evening programming for teens. Monthly, the Library will host After Hours at the Library. This is a special event, when the Library is not open to the general public, on the first Friday of the month from 6:00 – 9:00 pm for high school students who live in the city of White Plains. For our elementary schoolers, please join us for our programs at The Trove! We have an array of activities for different age groups throughout the month.  LEGO Club! Jazz at Noon: Vanessa Racci Jazzy Italian

Friday September 13th, 12PM. This program celebrates Italian Americans who made their mark on jazz. Descended from Southern Italian immigrants, Vanessa Racci grew up living with her Barese grandfather who played Jazz and Italian classics throughout the house. Racci is known for creating her own unique sound, blending jazz and Italian influences. Her most recent album, Jazzy Italian (2022, Zoho Jazz label), was produced and arranged by GRAMMY Award-winner Steven Feifke, and was named among the Top 10 Traditional Jazz Albums of 2022 on the RMR jazz chart. Slow Reading Book Discussion

The Slow Reading Discussion Group will start off the 2024-25 year with a close study of ten stories by the great Canadian master of the form and Nobel Laureate, Alice Munro, who died this past May. Leading the group is Ellen Lambert, who has a Ph.D. from Yale and taught high school English at The Dalton School for over 25 years. Paws to Read

The Library is so excited to bring back a “read to a dog” program, with Paws to Read during which children in grades K-6 can read with therapy dog Rufus. Paws for Reading takes place on Fridays – September 13, September 27, October 11, October 25 – from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Spots are limited to five children per session.  Sign up at the Compass Desk in the Trove starting 30 minutes prior.  Reading with a therapy dog has numerous benefits for children.
