Be Prepared — Workshops at the Library

The Library is hosting two workshops in December to help citizens prepare for the unexpected. On December 4 at 7:00 p.m., the American Red Cross will offer “Prepare, Respond and Recover: What to do When a Disaster Strikes.” On December 6 from 2:00-4:00 p.m., the Child Care Council of Westchester will present “What do do in an Emergency” in Spanish. Governor Cuomo initiated the Red Cross training so that New York citizens are prepared for natural and man made disasters. Kindergarten Here I Come!

School starts in White Plains on Monday, September 9. For children entering Kindergarten, it is an important time. Watch a film together with your child to help them get ready. Upbeat and authentic, this 18 minute, special video generates excitement about starting Kindergarten. There will be an all day continuous showing in The Cave alternating in both English and Spanish, from 12 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4, Thursday, September 5, and Friday September 6.

Holiday and Vacation Programs in The Trove

A week off from school! What to do with this gift of time? Come to The Trove. On Sunday, December 23, we will have ¡Feliz Navidad!, a family storytime in Spanish. The following Sunday, we will have Lionheart Puppets perform The Reluctant Dragon. Both programs are at 2 p.m. On Wednesday, December 26, Stories & Stuff for children age 4 & 5 will be at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the family program Pajamarama is at 7 p.m. On Thursday, December 27 at 4 p.m., there will be a special holiday Jeopardy game for children seven years and older.

A Back to School Tip for Parents

For kindergarten and elementary school students, a library card should be part of the school supply list. The White Plains Public Library and The Trove give children library cards from birth because the librarians believe that reading aloud to a child is the best preparation for reading. (And studies support this.) Make a trip to The Trove part of your family routine. Every week or two come get some great stories to take home. Choose a program (or several) to attend.
