People & Stories Oral History Project: Harold Mercer

Harold Mercer is a lifelong White Plains resident whose roots go back to the arrival of his grandfather in the 1890s. His grandfather was an English artist who settled on the east side of White Plains and helped start the Eastside Engine Company. His father, also named Harold Mercer, was the Westchester County Clerk and became the White Plains Civil Defense Director. Mercer remembers attending RKO Keith's on Main Street to see vaudeville acts like Peg Leg Bates and the Three Stooges. Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Gala to Support The Hub

Proceeds will help support The Hub, our new adult library, as first floor renovations resume this winter. Our honoree is Phil Klay, a White Plains native and author of Redeployment, the 2014 National Book Award winner for fiction, a short-story collection based on Phil’s experiences as a Marine in Iraq. Chess Challenge with Joshua Colas

Saturday, Oct. 24, 2-4 p.m.–Calling all chess players, 3rd Grade through High School! White Plains HS Senior, and international chess champion, Joshua Colas will play two rounds of “simul” chess, where he plays up to 16 players at the same time! The first round starts at 2 p.m. and the second is at 2:45. Preregistration is not required; tickets for both sessions will be given out starting at 1:30. If you're a high school student thinking about applying to college, you have a lot of schools to consider. We're hosting a workshop to help you navigate this process. On Monday, October 19 at 7 p.m., join us in the Edge Media Lab. You'll learn how to evaluate potential schools to determine which one is the best fit for YOU, and you'll even get some tips on how to have a successful college visit.
