Summer Reading Game Kick Off

The Library’s annual Summer Reading game starts today, Monday, July 6 and will run through Friday, August 14! Due to the impact of COVID-19 on services, the Summer Reading Game will be completely online this year via the READsquared platform, the READsquared website, or the READsquared app, available for iOS and Android. Get Started! Register and login to READsquared. Individual youth participants can register as themselves, or parents and caregivers can register all of their children at one time. This allows for the adult to also log reading and activities. Once registered, choose and join the appropriate Summer Reading Game

The Library will be holding our free summer camps virtually this year. Thanks to a generous grant from Verisk Analytics to the White Plains Library Foundation we will continue with another Summer of Making. Starting on June 29th and going through August 6th, there will be 6 1-week mini-camps held on Zoom for teens in grades 7-12. 3D Printers Donated to Hospital

3D Printers Donated to Hospital

Dr. Stephen Erosa from St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers reached out to Westchester libraries with a call to action. Dr. Erosa has started a 3D printer farm at the hospital and asked Westchester Libraries to contribute their machines. He will be printing out pieces for face guards for hospital staff and essential workers. The White Plains Public Library stepped up and donated its two 3D printers, the Ultimaker 2+ extended and the Flashforge Creator Pro, along with six rolls of filament to help out the cause. EDGE-Versary 2018

On December 14, the Edge invited teens to attend an after-hours party celebrating the 5th anniversary of our teen library. Activities included six modern and retro video game tournaments with prizes, a Harry Potter mystery to solve, table-top games, a craft table with button making and Perler beads, a technology playground full of electronics to tinker with, robot races with prizes for the winners, and a Virtual Reality cooperative puzzle challenge. On Monday, September 18, the Edge, the White Plains Public Library’s teen library, will hold its first Volunteer Interest Meeting for the “Do Gooders,” a new community service group for teens. “Do Gooders” follows the announcement that The Allstate Foundation awarded the White Plains Public Library a $25,000 grant for teen programs through “Good Starts in the Edge.” With the launch of “Do Gooders,” teens can earn volunteer hours for school or clubs, or just work to make a difference in their community. Battle of the Books in the Edge

Battle of the Books in the Edge

All tweens and teens entering grades 6-10 in September 2016 are invited to join The Edge team for the Battle of the Books competition! Teams from libraries throughout Westchester will compete by answering trivia questions based on five different books. Participants will read the pre-selected books over the summer, attend team meetings in the fall, and compete (as a team) in the Westchester Library System Battle of the Books tournament. Summer TV Production Camp 2016

Our TV production camp is back with 2 sessions this summer that run from June 27-July 8, and August 8-August 18, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Students entering grades 6-9 in the Fall can come and learn all aspects of creating a short news segment for the Global Ambassadors REACT News station, and eat snacks while doing so. Taught by teachers from White Plains schools, students will learn how to write scripts, interview, film and edit a short video. TV Production Camp with the Global Ambassadors

Teens from White Plains will spend two weeks learning the ins and outs of creating a short news clip for R.E.A.C.T. News. Students will learn how to research a story, write a script, interview, tell the story on camera, and edit.
