Peter Wood: A retrospective

On view in the Library Museum Gallery from September 28, 2014 through November 28, 2014, this exhibit features the work of Peter Wood, an English teacher at White Plains High School. His art has been shown in Manhattan, Easthampton, NY and the mid-west. One of his paintings was featured in an exhibit at the Katonah Museum of Art. All of the books used in his work were re-purposed from discarded items from libraries, schools or private collections. Free Career and Educational Counseling at the Library

WEBS Career and Educational Counseling Service is once again offering a free eight-week career counseling seminar for adults this fall called “Managing Your Career in Changing Times”. Intro to 3D Printing and Design

Come and learn about 3D printing and Computer-aided design (CAD) with SketchUp, a free computer application. Participants will have the chance to design an original object and bring it home in physical form via the library’s MakerBot Replicator 2 (3D Printer). Celebrate Diwali with Us!

Learn about Indian culture in this children's program! Join us to celebrate Diwali with our Indian community. Also known as “Festival of Lights”, Diwali is a Hindu festival that celebrates the triumph of good versus evil. Volunteer GED Tutors Needed

According to the US Census, 90,000 adults in Westchester do not have high school diplomas. The Office of Community Connections at the Westchester Library System is seeking volunteers to help GED seekers of all ages improve their skills and prepare for the exam. Opportunities are available in White Plains as well as several other communities throughout Westchester. Volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of three hours per week throughout the year. White Plains Youth Bureau Accepting Applications for Youth of the Year Award

The White Plains Youth Bureau is now accepting applications for its Youth of the Year Award. The Award is given annually to a graduating high school senior from either a public or private school. The award recognizes outstanding volunteer service and contributions to making a difference in the City of White Plains. The award recipient must be a City of White Plains resident. The History and Future of Video Games

The progression of technology is seemingly exponential, especially with regard to electronic gaming. In “The History & Future of Video Games,” a class consisting of three independent sessions on October 2, October 9, and October 23 at 3:30 p.m., teens are exposed to video games of the past and present in order to imagine the video games of the future. We will host a college essay writing workshop for first generation college students on Saturday, October 19 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 26 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. (This is a two-session program.) Our Poetry Slam & Open Mic program this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. features Venessa Marie Marco, a member of the 2013 Nuyorican National Slam Team, which placed third in the National Poetry Slam in Boston in August. Kindergarten Here I Come!

School starts in White Plains on Monday, September 9. For children entering Kindergarten, it is an important time. Watch a film together with your child to help them get ready. International Film Festival Coming to a Close

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this summer's festival. We plan to be back next year with a variety of acclaimed international films. Our last film will be Rudo y Cursi (Mexico, comedy/drama/sport), starring Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, who also starred together in the critically praised Y Tu Mamá También. Rudo y Cursi will be shown Monday, August 26 at 2 p.m. and repeated at 7 p.m. All of this summer's films will be put in our DVD collection.
